Voice of Democracy Speech Winner

VFW Winner!

Enormous congratulations to Scituate High School senior, David Murphy, who won first place in the Massachusetts VFW Voice of Democracy speech competition. As the Massachusetts nominee, David will go on to compete in the national contest next month in Washington DC.

Earlier this year, David was one of the finalists selected when SHS held their local Voice of Democracy speech contest, sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary. He was again selected as finalist at the district level and competed at the statewide contest last month. The Voice of Democracy speech competition aims to promote patriotism among high school students and requires students to speak on a topic related to our nation. This year’s prompt was: “What are the greatest attributes of our democracy?” David beat out over a thousand other students from Massachusetts to earn first place.

“David raises the level of historical thinking and discourse in our class every day.” said Heather Willinger, David’s AP US Government teacher. “It’s hard to put into words what a great student he is. The combination of his strong writing and speaking skills, his dedication and hard work and his inquisitive nature make him the perfect example of an exceptional and well rounded student.”
