The Latest School Committee Highlights 11-7-2022 Meeting
On November 7, 2022 the School Committee approved their goals for the 2022-2023 school year. Their goals are in alignment with district goals focusing on the whole student and prioritizing communication.
Superintendent Burkhead shared a tentative schedule of important topics that will be a part of school committee agendas including but not limited to:
- Each school & department's celebration of student learning
- Updates on school improvement plan progress
- METCO update
- Quarterly budget updates
- Addressing financial literacy
- School calendar vote
- Kindergarten registration update
- Equity audit update
- Special education update
- Superintendent evaluation
- SED Team update
Other highlights were the approval of several student overnight field trips including a DECA competition in December 2022, an MASC Student Council Conference in March 2023, a trip to Spain in April 2024, and a trip to Quebec City in May of 2024.
Additionally, Principal Riordan from Wampatuck shared Wampatuck's Celebration of Student Learning (see link below) and Dr. Maguire shared an informational update in relation to Scituate High School's School Improvement Plan.
Dr. Maguire presented 2022 Accountability Data (MCAS data), which can be found on the high school website under academics/reports. MCAS achievement percentiles range from 79-88 in the three tested areas and students showed typical growth in ELA and Math.
AP data from 2022 shows that 79% of our AP students scored a 3 or higher on at least one test. SHS currently offers 22 AP courses.
The high school attendance data indicated that 3.4% of high school students were chronically absent, at least 20%, or 36 days of the school year. As DESE returns this indicator back to 10%, the high school administration and counseling staff are working hard to support students and caregivers to get to school and to keep the chronic absentee rate down.
Teachers from across the high school are working together throughout the year to improve MCAS, AP and attendance outcomes.
