8th Grade Students Write Op-Eds

The Giver

Our current society faces many challenges that demand critical examination and creative solutions. Engaging in the art of crafting op-eds offers students a valuable opportunity to participate in real-world discourse, allowing them to articulate their perspectives, express concerns, and propose creative solutions to specific societal issues.

Students in Ms. Lirosi and Ms. McCarthy’s 8th grade classes are embarking on a research journey, to delve deeply into topics of their choosing.  They are analyzing various viewpoints and exploring the underlying causes and potential consequences of the issues they critique. Through this process, they will pose critical questions, evaluate evidence, and cultivate a comprehensive understanding of their chosen subjects.

Using the novel "The Giver" as a catalyst for this exploration adds an enriching dimension. If the purpose of Dystopian Literature is to scrutinize our own communities, what insights can be gleaned from "The Giver" that will enable us to examine and understand our own world better?  Our 8th graders will soon find out!
