students hold an "S" flag

On Thursday May 18th, a group of 19 aspiring leaders from Scituate High School had the privilege of attending The Light Leadership Foundation Conference at Bridgewater State University. The day was filled with opportunities to socialize and connect with over 100 hundred other students from Brockton, Canton, New Bedford, and Randolph High Schools.

This is the second year that SHS students have attended the conference. To attend, students answered intriguing prompts surrounding the theme of this year's event, “Ditching Distractions, Finding Focus”. Based on their insightful responses, students were then asked to attend the conference.

The day began with keynote speaker Thony Dervil who shared his personal journey on overcoming adversity and using hardships to succeed. The students were then divided into groups to partake in various activities, including creating vision boards, learning about physical well being from TB12 fitness, exploring techniques to enhance happiness, and gaining a deeper understanding of oneself. Sophomore Jane Ryan expressed, “I really liked how many different activities there were because I got to learn something new from each instructor”.

Students got a taste of the college experience by getting to eat in the Bridgewater State cafe. The lunch break was followed by an inspirational talk from Devin McCourty, a previous New England Patriot and passionate advocate. McCourty shared the story of his childhood and tips for success while maturing. He stated, ‘Life will throw you distractions, but you can use them as inspiration to fuel personal growth’. McCourty motivated students by explaining both how to plan for success and give back to the community. One student, sophomore Cici Griffin, expressed that the day was well spent, “I was really impressed by the speakers and the conference as a whole. I definitely learned some beneficial life skills”.

Matt Light, the founder of The Light Foundation, closed off the day with words of encouragement for the attendants. His foundation has had a positive impact on our students and community as a whole. Overall, the students who attended the Light Foundation conference experienced a day filled with inspiration, growth, and connection.
