February Highlights
Let Me Call You Sweetheart
Wampatuck students and staff spread love and kindness by sending Valentine cards to Scituate community members and organizations. It is our way of saying thank you and we appreciate all you do for our town.
100 Days of School
Wampatuck students and staff celebrated 100 Days of school on February 8. All the doors were decorated to represent 100 creating a “100 Day Museum”. Everyone enjoyed taking a gallery walk to admire all the ways to make 100.
4th and 5th Grade Projects
4th and 5th grade students are growing into Scientists and Social Scientists! Students are using their reading, writing, researching, and background knowledge skills to create projects and teach others about a variety of science and social studies topics.
Library Update: New Furniture
The library is getting a makeover this year. We have added a new circulation desk and new furniture. Students are enjoying the comfy chairs as a place to read and share stories with friends and classmates.
Character Strong
This month’s focus is Honesty. One way to think about Honesty is “being truthful in what you say and do.” Practicing Honesty helps strengthen our relationships and even reduces stress. Honesty is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Well. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.
Review Honesty as a family! Honesty is being truthful in what you say and do. Discuss the importance of being Honest and work together to create a family Honesty pledge. Create and decorate a sign together that explains what Honesty means in your family. Have each family member sign the pledge and choose a spot to display it. Refer back to the pledge as a reminder to be Honest and to celebrate when Honesty is practiced!
Rare Disease Day
Rare Disease Day is an internationally recognized day and initiative to raise awareness, generate support and advocate for care and treatments for the 300 million people globally, including 1 in 10 Americans who are living with a rare disease. It takes place annually on the last day of February, which this year is February 29 – the rarest day of the year!
The zebra is the mascot for rare disease patients because, in medicine, zebras represent uncommon answers. Historically, medical professionals were told that when they “hear hoofbeats,” they should not expect to see a zebra. In other words, look for the more common answer, a horse. Today, we know that 1 in 10 Americans is a zebra!
On February 29th, we ask you to SHOW YOUR STRIPES in honor of Rare Disease Day. Wampatuck and ECC staff and students are all encouraged to wear stripes this Thursday if possible.
