Lunar New Year Integration Projects

Students dancing with fans

Mrs. Sullivan’s class learn the fan dance in music class

  • In Library, Mrs. Barba read a book called “Chinese New Year” by Alice Flanagan. The children were delighted by the story of the wild beast and how villagers used fire and the color red to scare the beast.
  • Inspired by a video about the cultural traditions that go along with Lunar New Year, the students used gold sharpies and oil pastels to create abstract images on metallic paper in Mrs. Woodford’s art class.  The children then learned how to fold the papers into fans.
  • In music class with Ms. Counter, students learned a fan dance and then watched a professional ballet company performing with beautiful fans in a piece called “Jamine Flowers.”

Thank you to Mrs. Barba, Mrs. Woodford and Ms. Counter for creating this integrated learning experience!
