Hatherly Happenings

Hornet Student Advisory
- Our Hornet Student Advisory is made up of 4th and 5th graders who meet with Mrs. Sheahan every month.
- They came up with a plan to make lunch more engaging and enjoyable by introducing games and activities in the cafeteria.
- This plan was put into action for our 5th graders on Monday.
- Once they finish eating, they can choose from a variety of games and activities until the end of lunch.
- It was wonderful to see them coloring, making friendship bracelets, and playing games such as Uno, Guess Who?, and Checkers.
- Thank you to our PTO for purchasing these activities.

Assignment Day with Mayor Sheahan
- Fourth Graders are reading the science fiction novel, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.
- In the novel, the children of Ember participate in Assignment Day at the age of 12, and they receive the job that they will perform for the next 3 years.
- The fourth graders were able to reenact this scene from the story, and they will write an essay describing the scene from their perspective!
- The students were excited to see Mrs. Sheahan come in dressed as the mayor!
School Supplies for 2025-2026 School Year
- In the past, we have sent out School Kidz order forms to order your children’s supplies for next year.
- This year, we are using the proceeds from our Fun Run Fundraiser to purchase supplies for all Hatherly students!
- A big thank you to the PTO for planning the Fun Run and organizing this incredible opportunity for our Hatherly families!
- The PTO will arrange for all school supplies for students to arrive prior to the first day of school.
Dangerous TikTok Chromebook Trend
- I wanted to make you aware of a troubling TikTok trend that has been circulating among students and poses both a safety hazard and a risk of serious damage to school-issued Chromebooks.
- The trend involves students inserting pencil lead into the ports of their devices, which can cause the ports to smoke—and in some cases, even start a fire.
- This has been reported in schools both in and outside of Massachusetts.
- Multiple teachers at the high school and middle school have reported that they’ve overheard students discussing trying this, and thankfully, they stepped in immediately.
- While this is clearly intentional vandalism of school property, it’s also a serious safety concern.
- There have already been incidents at some schools where devices began smoking, prompting evacuations.
- Any device brought to us showing signs of this damage will be charged a replacement fee of $300.
- Our teachers will be sharing this information with our students, but we ask that you reinforce this message at home.
