PEAR Student SEL Assessment: Spring Check-In

Supporting Our Students' Social-Emotional Strengths & Needs

For several years, Scituate Public Schools has partnered with The PEAR Institute: Partnerships in Education and Resilience (PEAR) to promote the positive social-emotional development of our students. PEAR, a jointly created initiative between McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, conducts research to improve ways schools promote social-emotional development. Increasing evidence shows that helping students feel good about themselves, their school, and their relationships will enhance their learning.

This spring, beginning the week of April 28th, we will be readministering the Holistic Student Assessment (HSA) to students in Grades 3-8 to serve as a spring check-in with students. It is the same assessment we administered this past fall, and this information will help designated staff identify any shifts in students’ unique social-emotional strengths and needs.

If you are unfamiliar with PEAR, see the links below for HSA definitions and sample survey prompts. PEAR will use data from our school to support professional development for our faculty as well as for research and educational work. Be assured, your student’s name will never be used as part of this research.

If you completed the opt-out form in the fall, you do not need to complete it again, as we have your request on record.

If you do not want your student to take the HSA and have not completed the opt-out form previously, please complete the form linked below. Otherwise, we will assume that we have permission for:

  • your student to take the survey
  • information to be given to designated faculty to help them understand your student’s strengths, relationships, interests, and needs
  • research purposes to improve ways schools support the social-emotional development of students

Opt-out forms must be completed by Friday, April 18, 2025

For more information, please contact your building principal for more details.
