Hatherly Happenings

Thank you to our PTO!
On Monday, our amazing PTO provided every student and staff with a pair of eclipse safety viewing glasses and a fun backdrop to take photos! We had so much fun learning about the eclipse throughout the day and viewing this natural phenomenon.
Poetry Lesson with Mr. Adams
Last Thursday, the fourth graders invited Mr. adams to be a guest poet and guide a lesson on poetry to shake them out of their MCAS and rain-induced stupors! Mr. adams discussed what makes a poem a poem and what a poem can mean to both the reader and to the writer. He talked about how poetry is a way to creatively and uniquely express yourself while examining the world around you using your five senses. After reading a poem to the students, he invited them all to write their own poem in response and challenged them to think beyond this experience to connect their emotions with vivid images and moments from their lives using similes and metaphors. The students rose to the occasion and were engaged and thoughtful throughout the lesson. We appreciate Mr. adams sharing his time, his passion, and his positivity with all of us! Below we have an original poem about the eclipse by Cora Prentiss!
Fourth Grader River Gilligan wrote this letter of thanks to Mr. adams:
You have inspired me to write poems! You are so nice! Thank you. You are amazing! You have made me want to write poems every day. I can’t wait until you come again!

Planting with Farmer Jon
Fourth and fifth graders planted peas and lettuce with farmer Jon from Holly Hill Farm! Thank you to our PTO for funding these interactive lessons!
Grade 3 Physicals
This is a friendly reminder that every child in third grade is required to have an updated physical examination on file in their school health record. If you have not yet provided an updated physical examination, please obtain a physical examination report from your child's health care provider and return it to the school. Documentation can also be faxed to the school at 781-545-8786. If you are unsure of whether this has already been provided, please reach out to Nurse Jessica.
MCAS Dates
We are so proud of all of the hard work that our third, fourth and fifth graders put into ELA MCAS this month. See the schedule below for upcoming math and STE dates:
Spring Fever
We are all getting excited for spring activities and nicer weather! With this on the horizon this is a friendly reminder to please try and notify the office with any dismissal changes by 2pm daily or any ongoing schedule changes due to spring after school activities! We want to make sure all students are safe at dismissal and limit any confusion! Thank you for your support and understanding with dismissal changes.
