Grade 2 Migration & Culture

Grade 2 studied a social studies unit on migration and culture. They learned about the different reasons people move from one place to another, the cultural differences, what is easy and hard about moving to a new place and what types of momentos they bring with them. As a final wrap up, the students interviewed a person of their choice who had moved a long distance. The goal was to learn about the reason behind moving, what was difficult, what they enjoyed and learned. Following the interview, students created a project to present to the class about what they learned.

March Reading and Math Fun

March is Read Across America month and Hatherly is planning many fun events for our students. Starting next week, we will be hosting a March Book Madness tournament. Each week students will read two books and then vote on their favorite. One book from each bracket will move on to the next round. By the end of the month we will vote for our winner! The books are Character Strong books that focus on our monthly themes.

Throughout the month, classrooms will invite guest readers to come and read books to students. Older classrooms will also visit younger classrooms to do some buddy reading.

Physical Education Fun

Mr. Puzzangara has had some really fun and engaging lessons the past few weeks during PE classes and we wanted to share! Students “bowled” during PE and they kept track of how many strikes happened throughout the week in grade 5.  Additionally, students in Ms. Levine’s first grade class had fun playing in a parachute - an elementary favorite!

Math Week

We celebrated math all week long to coincide with Pi Day on Thursday, 3/14.  One activity our 3rd graders worked on was a math scavenger hunt with Ms. Huntress. They applied many different math skills to solve a variety of word problems. What a great way to practice those 3rd grade concepts!

Technology Class

During Tech classes our 4th graders are working on the Engineering Is Elementary unit-Leif Catches the Wind. In this unit, students analyze structures of different machines and compare different technologies that use wind energy. Students then follow the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own windmill blades!

Folk Dance Party - Grades 2 & 3

Please join us for the first ever Hatherly Folk Dance Party!  Come learn how to folk dance to different genres of music! This may strike a bit of fear in your heart, but don’t worry, you WILL have fun!  The 2nd and 3rd grade students are SUPER EXCITED to show you things they have been learning in music, but an even bigger reason is that it brings us together as a Hatherly Family. Siblings of all ages are welcome to join. You do NOT need to know how to folk dance, and you don’t need to learn the dances ahead of time.  The 2nd and 3rd graders have been doing these dances and are very excited to teach you their moves during the event.

2nd and 3rd Grade Families please sign up for this event, if you have not already done so.
