March Reading and Math Fun

March is Read Across America month and Hatherly is planning many fun events for our students.

  • Starting next week, we will be hosting a March Book Madness tournament.
  • Each week students will read two books and then vote on their favorite.
  • One book from each bracket will move on to the next round.

By the end of the month we will vote for our winner! The books are Character Strong books that focus on our monthly themes.

Throughout the month, classrooms will invite guest readers to come and read books to students. Older classrooms will also visit younger classrooms to do some buddy reading.

Math Week

We will “wear” math all week and practice some great math vocabulary too the week of March 11 - 15th.  Please see how to participate below (as always optional).

Plimoth Patuxet

On Monday February 26th, 3rd graders had the opportunity to visit Plimoth Patuxet. While there, they participated in five centers that were geared towards our third grade Social Studies curriculum.

  • They learned about Wampanoag life from the inside of a wetu, where they heard about hunting, daily life, and even felt some real animal pelts!
  • They were also able to play with some real Native American games and toys!
  • When students transitioned down to the pilgrim village, students learned how pilgrims made bread and nasaump by grinding corn with a mortar and pestle before separating the components using a sifter.
  • At the History's Mysteries station, students were challenged to figure out the purpose of different objects that were once used by Native Americans and Pilgrims.
  • They needed to use their senses to observe the object, and received a picture clue to help them determine the use of each item.

What a fun learning experience for our 3rd graders!

Family Math and Literacy Night

On Tuesday night, families were able to visit the book fair and play math and literacy games in the cafeteria. The theme of the night was Set Sail, Dream, Explore, Discover. Students received a passport upon entering and were able to “travel” to different stations to play games. Members of our 5th grade student government helped students plan adventures, create big Bananagrams, and think about where they would want to travel. Mrs. Huntress guided students through fun math games as well.

Thank you to Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Harwood, Miss Huntington, Mrs. Huntress, Mrs. O’Brien, and Miss Pescatore for making this night possible. I also need to give a shout out to our 5th grade helpers: Phoebe Shea, Catie Quirk, Megan Jacobus, Ellis Sykes, Justin Bacon, Emily Janezic, Cecilia Paress, Faye McCarthy, and Maya Harrington. They did an incredible job teaching students the games and helping everyone to have a great time!

Reminder No school on Tuesday, March 5th

  • Students DO NOT have school on March 5th.
  • Students DO have school on March 28th.

Report Cards

  • Report cards will be live on Aspen on Friday, March 15, 2024

Book Fair

This week, Hatherly hosted its annual book fair. Students were able to visit the book fair during their Library time and choose from a wide selection of books. Through this book fair, we were able to raise money to buy books for our library, classrooms, and WINN blocks. Thank you to all for your supporting this event. A special thank you to Julie Long for helping to organize the book fair and to all of the PTO parents who staffed the book fair all week. We could not have done it without you!

Rare Disease Day

Members of the Hatherly staff wore stripes to spread awareness of  Rare Disease Day on February 29th. The zebra, with its signature black and white stripes — each with a pattern as different as a fingerprint — is the official symbol of rare diseases in the United States. Shown here is our wonderful ILC paraprofessional, Nancy Buckley, with 5th grade Chris Dietz.

Cultural Cuisine

On Thursday, our cafeteria served some cultural cuisine, ramen bowls with Mochi for dessert. It was a big hit! The LIT team set the menu and visited our K-2 classrooms to explain how they came up with the menu. Great job, LIT team!

Folk Dance Party - Grades 2 & 3 image10-12.jpg

Please join us for the first ever Hatherly Folk Dance Party!  Come learn how to folk dance to different genres of music! This may strike a bit of fear in your heart, but don’t worry, you WILL have fun!  The 2nd and 3rd grade students are SUPER EXCITED to show you things they have been learning in music, but an even bigger reason is that it brings us together as a Hatherly Family. Siblings of all ages are welcome to join. You do NOT need to know how to folk dance, and you don’t need to learn the dances ahead of time.  The 2nd and 3rd graders have been doing these dances and are very excited to teach you their moves during the event.
